Effects of Tabata training on excess postexercise oxygen uptake (EPOC)

After moderate submaximal to high-intensity exercise, oxygen uptake is elevated above resting level, depicted as excess postexercise oxygen uptake (EPOC) (Bahr et al., 1987, 1992). Since EPOC continues for a long time, it has been considered to be important from the view point of increased energy consumption due to exercise (US DRIs) (Food and Nutrition Board, Institute of Medicine, 2002). However, most of the previous studies reported EPOC after exercises at submaximal intensity. There has been a rumor that Tabata training is effective for losing body weight. However, EPOC after a supramaximal intensity exercise of Tabata training exercise has not yet been quantified. Therefore, using a metabolic chamber (Fig. 4.9), we quantified excess postexercise oxygen consumption (EPOC) and elevated oxygen uptake by diet (ΔDIT) after Tabata bicycle training exercise (Tsuji et al., 2017).
